I'm Going To Amsterdam.

I'm off to Amsterdam next Thursday for a business trip. I'm taking part in an international furniture conservation seminar in Rijksmuseum but I'm hoping I will have time to check out some other sights as well and of course visit some local yarn stores. (I'm giving myself a well deserved break from my stash slimming project.) So if anyone of you know The Places to visit in Amsterdam, I'm very interested to hear!

(Photo borrowed from here)

I've been kind of holding off knitting the Stasis pullover with this trip in my mind. I've noticed that I concentrate a lot better if I have something to do with my hands (i.e. knitting), especially if I just have to sit still and quietly listening to presentations and lectures all day long. The Stasis is mostly just simple stockinette stitch so I thought it would be perfect mechanical knitting for such an occasion. Plus I don't have to check my charts in a dimly lit auditorium or be afraid of drawing unwanted attention by dropping my cable needle on the floor (been there, done that: it makes surprisingly lot of noise in a quiet lecture hall, and people don't like it when you ask them to pick it up when it has rolled somewhere under their seats...) So I'm packing the Stasis with me to 'Dam.

It's too bad Finnair doesn't allow knitting while flying, but luckily it's just a short flight, something like 2 and a half hours... I was only going to take my carry-on luggage with me, but I'm not sure how the airport staff will react to my knitting needles. I do have wooden needles so I'm hoping it will be OK.

  1. Awesome! Do you get to roam around the Rijksmuseum after the seminar? Because it's truly wonderful and they just opened a new wing. If you prefer modern art, the Stedelijk Museum is just across the square and also excellent.

As for yarn, you should check out Penelope Craft, it's actually quite close to the Rijksmuseum. There's also De Afstap, which is near a very nice neighbourhood to explore, the Jordaan. Nearby there are the 'negen straatjes' which are nine little streets with nice, hip little shops and cafes. Ok, they're kinda cheesy and touristy but still cute and fun, a nice concentrated dose of Amsterdam if you're short on time :)

    1. Thanks! This was exactly the kind of info I was looking for :) there are so many yarn stores listed on Ravelry that I didn't know which ones to pick as I'm short on time.

I do hope we get to see the exhibitions in Rijksmuseum as well, I've actually been to Amsterdam once before (maybe 6 years ago?) but Rijksmuseum was under renovation at that time and I only got to see the masterpieces.

  2. Luulisin, että Finnairkin hyväksyy puiset puikot. Minä olen ainakin Ryanairin lennoilla neulonut monet kerrat bambupuikoilla eikä kukaan ole koskaan huomauttanut mitään.

Beret Pattern.

Here is the pattern for the berets I've knitted. The name for the beret is from the t-shirt I was wearing when I took the project photos of the first beret for Ravelry. I thought the name suited the beret, since it's quite classical take on the hat that has become the icon of everything French. Happy knitting! Salut Chéri! Saving A Curling Scarf.

Don't you just hate it when a piece you've spent hours working on doesn't turn out the way you imagined it? It looks like this... ...when it should be more like this. After just a couple of rows into the Trellis scarf I noticed the cast on edge started to roll upwards ever so slightly. As I continued to knit the curling got worse and worse until it seemed to calm down when the scarf measured 10 cm or so from the CO edge. I didn't really stress much about it thinking it would be easily fixed later on and continued to knit further. Halfway through knitting the scarf I faced another problem with the scarf. The CO edge still rolled up and now the sides started to curl inwards. So badly that the scarf lost more than half of it's width. I hate it when it happens. If this was something I designed myself I could maybe live with the mistake, but when it's a pattern that is published I would assume such things would have been fixed. Or at least
